The roses and shapes and splashes of bright color seem so happy and bubbly until you notice the explosive devices hidden in them.

The level of detail in the background here is extraordinary, and it really emphasizes the contrast between the solid forest and the simple, transparent, (almost ghostly?) figure. I don’t really know the story behind this image, but it’s intriguing.

The first thing that strikes me is the casual brightness—it’s captured perfectly, that specific weather and time of day when everything relaxes and you just want to go sit in a field somewhere with sunglasses. The second thing that strikes me is the expressive background, how the “accidental” drips and splatters come together to grow quietly into trees without detracting from the figure. It’s all so perfectly casual.

The overlapping heads, accentuated by the expressive strands of hair, make the painting appear to almost move, while the contrast between the soft, blended tones and the sharp, shimmering highlights give the painting a faded quality, like a lost memory.

These paintings are all so graphically strong, with striking compositions and high contrast, but they’re still incredibly painterly and expressive. It’s intriguing.
