fischnette:

At Sundance I also had the opportunity of accompanying talented writer Deenah Vollmer to photograph Marina Abramovic. It was a transcending experience. As Marina spoke I fell madly in love with her energy and her insights. I truly think she should write a book or do a series of video diaries for her institute. Although her work is incredible, there is something about how she articulates her view on the world that changed the way I see everything.

ejhill.tumblr took part in the annual Gala organised by Marina Abramović at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in November 2011:

“For a total of about four hours, I was the most powerful person at my table. I watched as the wealthiest people I’ve never met, reluctantly took seats around me. First, their faces showed signs of stunned disbelief as they entered the space. Second, the awkward laughs and iPhone photos came, then it was confused and forced smiles as they sat down. Finally, came the extreme discomfort from the reality of the situation—they would actually have to eat in front of us. But interestingly enough, in a very rare and beautiful moment, the power dynamics that have existed for hundreds of years between artists and the wealthy had been reversed. The performance lasted only a few hours, but during those few hours, from a seemingly degraded position, I silently dictated an entire conversation. I was able to halt people mid-sentence by slowly turning and locking in on any one of the individuals at my table. They fumbled with their forks, stuttered on words and took out their phones to read invisible text messages. They employed all sorts of techniques to distract themselves in order to ease the tension. Periodically, someone would shake their head in contempt and frustration. Some only ate while I was turned away from them while others got up and left the table entirely.” Read more here

25 abandoned Yugoslavia monuments that look like they’re from the future

“These structures were commissioned by former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito in the 1960s and 70s to commemorate sites where WWII battles took place or where concentration camps stood. They were designed by different sculptors and architects, conveying powerful visual impact to show the confidence and strength of the Socialist Republic. In the 1980s, these monuments attracted millions of visitors per year, especially young pioneers for their ‘patriotic education.’ After the Republic dissolved in early 1990s, they were completely abandoned, and their symbolic meanings were forever lost. From 2006 to 2009, Kempenaers toured around the ex-Yugoslavia region with the help of a 1975 map of memorials, bringing before our eyes a series of melancholy yet striking images.”

Pseudodocumentation is an amazing project created by David Dimichele in 2007 for Kopeikin Gallery (Los Angeles). He created the perfect illusion of giant installations in human-sized exhibition spaces. Stunning.

Katsura Funakoshi

Born in 1951 in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, Katsura Funakoshi is a contemporary artist living and working in Tokyo. He received a B.A. from the Tokyo University of Art and Design in 1975 and a M.A. from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1977.

The son of a sculptor, Funakoshi is known primarily for his own figurative sculptures of legless mannequins in painted camphor wood. The sculptures, which often consist of torsos, heads, and the occasional misplaced human appendage, are praised for their haunting quality, elicited by the soft, human-like texture of the painted camphor wood combined with the disconcertingly realistic marble eyeballs. He has exhibited worldwide, including at the Venice Biennale, the Biennale de São Paulo, the Documenta IX, and in several solo shows in the U.S., England, and Japan.
