Will Kurtz‘s paper sculptures bring ordinary New Yorkers to life. His show Extra Fucking Ordinary consists of life size figural sculptures constructed of collaged torn sheets of newspaper, wood, wire, screws, tape and everyday objects which depict the characters captured by Kurtz’s iPhone camera lens. Utilizing the observing eye of a curious urban voyeur, Kurtz spends large portions of his days combing the streets of New York for his subjects, which are later transformed into sincere and amusing life-size sculptures.

LAST CHANCE TO ENTER! Selections occur tonight!

SAM SPRATT’S SPRING PORTRAIT CONTEST/CUSTOM PORTRAIT/SIGNED PRINT GIVEAWAY!

Spring is around the corner which means as thanks to you for following me here, as usual—I am giving TWO of you the chance to win a custom portrait made by me, custom-tailored to your heart’s desire. Free, no strings attached.  The rules are simple, but read them so you can win.

What You Get:

A Web-resolution (1100 pixel) custom portrait, tailored to your most bizarre of requests. You can get a very traditional portrait done or as outlandish as you can dream. Zombies, Hipsters, Pirates, Ninjas, Superheroes, Robots, etc. are all fair-game themes in which you can have yourself transmogrified in painted form.

ADDITIONALLY, I’ll be giving 3 runner-ups their choice of a 13”x19” signed velvet archival print. Choices are: Sherlock, Ron Swanson, and Inspector Spacetime.

How to Enter:

FACEBOOK: Simply comment on the following facebook post. You get an extra entry if you click the “share” button and post it to your wall. ( Sam Spratt - Facebook Contest )

TWITTER: Follow http://twitter.com/#!/SamSpratt and tweet the following phrase verbatim on twitter:

“ Entering to win a custom portrait #painting from @samspratt’s portrait contest! https://www.facebook.com/sam.spratt ”

This also counts as an entry.

TUMBLR: Just reblog/like this post!

How long this will last:

This contest will run until April 6th, 2012.

You all are the best! Good luck and thanks again to all who follow my little slice of artwork on the web.

NOTE: You must be a follower or subscriber at the time of the win.

Why all this? Well, you’ve gotta write a big check with quite a few zeros at the end of it to commission art from me—and call me crazy, but I firmly believe that in a perfect world, people *should* get to own art AND do things like “pay rent”, “eat food-like substances on occasion”, and maybe even “continue to live”. Two of you can do that, the rest of you… you’re screwed. Sincerely,

‘Cybil’

I’ve been working on this project for the past few months. I decided I would sell these through my tumblr on more of a word-of-mouth basis since the initial batch is so small. I’ve only made 25 of each item. If I get a good enough response from these, I’ll consider making more.

Each necklace is adorned with a half-moon shaped piece of a real butterfly wing, which glows when the light hits it.

————————————————————

Pendant-$38  (individual pendant orders are SOLD OUT. 5 remain but you must purchase the 3-item bundled set)

Ring- $15

Print-$30

3 item bundled set-$75

————————————————————

Story: I based this collection of items off a ghost. A bored friend and I where tampering around with an old Ouija board of mine one night with nothing to do. Then we actually started getting some coherent responses to the questions we were reading out loud. She said for us to call her ‘Cybil’. She confessed to us a little bit about her life. She talked about the things most precious to her. About her pet lamb that had been sent to slaughter, the old woods around her home, and the night she burned in her bed. She talked about standing in my hallway at night. She talked about how the moths liked to flutter around and land on her in the dark. The same flame that burned her in her bed attracts the moths at night. I thought I might share a piece of Cybil with you. That way, if you wear this little flame charm around your neck, the moths might quietly dance around you.

————————————————————

Details: The pendant is on a 27” chain. It measures about 1.5” tall. Ring measures about 1” in diameter, adjustable. Base metals so they should be kept from getting wet. Print is 8”x8” on textured watercolor, archival paper, signed.

With each piece being hand-crafted by me, individual pendants or rings may have minute bubbles in the resin, though, not noticeable enough to be distracting from the piece itself.

PayPal is preferred. Make a note in your email to me if you would rather pay in other forms.

Shipping within the U.S. $3, international $6

Due to how small the run is, first come, first serve.

EDIT: In under 2 hours, only 5 SETS LEFT. Reserve yours before theyre all gone! Thank you.

obitoftheday:

Obit of the Day: Artist Elizabeth Catlett

When Elizabeth Catlett began making art, African American artists were expected to reflect a Euro-centric style. Ms. Catlett, however, ignored conventions and spent her career producing sculptures and prints that celebrated black culture - its men, women, and heroes - that so many other artists ignored.

Elizabeth Catlett began as a high school teacher after graduating from Howard University. (She was admitted to Carnegie Mellon’s Carnegie Institute of Technology but they withdrew their offer when they learned she was black.) She eventually found her way to the University of Iowa in the hopes of learning from the legendary Grant Wood. She earned her M.F.A. and while there first sculpted portraits of black women and children from wood.

Ms. Catlett ended up in Mexico in 1946 on a fellowship - and never left. It was while in Mexico that she created her most memorable works. In 1962, she renounced her U.S. citizenship and was declared by the U.S. State Department to be an “undesirable alien.” It did not hinder her career. In 1958, she was named the head of the sculpture department at the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s School of Fine Arts; also becoming the university’s first female professor of sculpture.

Her works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Prague and the High Museum in Atlanta. (Personal note: OOTD saw her works for the first time at the Art Institute in 2006 and fell in love with her prints, which is why those are the images I selected.)

Elizabeth Catlett died at the age of 96.

Lithograph on paper

“When I first started at Howard University, I was very frivolous and social-minded. I was in design. I was going to be a commercial artist and make a lot of money. I learned from James Porter [of the Howard art faculty] the seriousness of being an artist. He taught me that you have to discipline yourself.

Then when I went to the University of Iowa, Grant Wood [painter of American Gothic] taught me that you should work with what you know the most about. That’s what he did. He painted Iowa, which is what he knew the most about.

I was always working with the black theme. I did a whole series on black women. Nobody was doing black women. I am a black woman. That’s what I know the most about.”

RICKY GERVAIS

Left: You’re the office toady, having a dutiful laugh over your boss’s latest racist joke—and all too aware that everyone else at work hates you.
Center: You’re a Miss Universe finalist in the nanosecond between being named fifth runner-up and remembering to flash your best I’m-so-happy smile.
Right: You’re the school doofus, blissfully unaware that your having just been named prom king is a cruel, Carrie-style stunt by your classmates.
