Jacob van Loon

  • Various water-based media pieces representational of research conducted on the Lincoln Highway. This body of paintings combines geometric, architecturally-inspired shapes with organic bursts of color and texture reminiscent of topography and road maps. The Lincoln Highway and cross-country travel was an idea born from the Midwest, and was the first road of it’s kind; birthing the interstate. It changed the way communication and connectivity occurs. Having studied art in a town where the first paved mile of the Lincoln Highway was created in the road’s early stages, its influence on commerce, development and communication have a direct influence on the paintings

One of my favourites by jacobvanloon.tumblr, I love the colours.

dofmagazine:

I must say I’m not too big on collages and photo montages but here’s something that is not only a beautifully raw attempt at it, but also a clever way of showcasing familiar places throughout times.

Just imagine it as a still time-lapse.

“Ultimately, a good photograph is one that brings us face to face with our own existence. It pulls the stranger standing next to us into the intimate radius of our life.”

How’s this for a live Photoshop content aware feature?

In the series of photographs titled Bronson Caves, the caves served as a stage set yet again. Bischoff performed actions for the camera with massive sheets of colored paper. Since a long-exposure photograph was produced rather than a motion picture, the papers were recorded as voluminous, glowing colors. The materiality of the rainbowed forms, emerging from the mouth of the cave, dancing about the canyon, and bubbling up from the ground, are based solely in the photographic process, and can only be experienced when viewing the final photographic prints.

“If a visitor to the caves were to accidently stumble upon my performance they would only see a mass of crumbled colored paper draped awkwardly over a man moving/dancing to a camera positioned on a tripod. The goal of these performances was to create sculptural, photographic objects that interacted with the history and architecture of the caves.”-Brice Bischoff

Dancing in colored paper yields beautiful results.

Hong Sungchul is an artist who creates large scale 3D work that consists of numerous elastic strings with an image divided and printed across all of them. When the strings are hung together in order, the final image is represented beautifully.

“Obon”, a temporary outdoor public project by Miya Ando in Puerto Rico. Floating 1000 resin and phosphorescence-coated leaves in a small pond. During the day the phosphorescence will collect and absorb energy from sunlight, at night the leaves will emit a soft, blue glow. This is a 24-hour project on May 31, 2012.

Halo of Rainbow by Steven Morgana

Using curved neon light tubes and mirrors, Steve is able to produce a mind-melting illusion with this floating circle of rainbow-y ghostliness.

100 years ago, on the night of the 14th of April, 1912, The White Star Liner R.M.S. Titanic struck an iceberg at 11.40pm on the starboard side.

And so through the next two hours, a series of dramas begin to unfold all over the ship - top to bottom, starboard side and port side, lower classes to the upper ranks of the Edwardian Era.

By 1.40am on the morning of April 15th, 1912, The entire bow section is already underwater and most of the lifeboats are gone (mostly half full with the exception of one boat with 70 ppl over its 65 ppl max cap), the steerage passengers, who were barred from going up to the first class decks, find themselves trapped on the stricken ship.

The band played on and by 2.15am, right after the bridge slipped under the waves with Capt. E.J. Smith, the first funnel collapses and washed away the collapsible rafts that were the last of the boats to leave.

The Grand Staircase imploded by the force of the Atlantic rushing in, and by 2.18am, everything was crashing forward as the she’s stern swung up to a staggering 30 degree angle.

The power failed and the lights went out as the ship splits into three parts and at last after staying vertical for the last moment, the Titanic slip beneath the waves at 2.20am. with 1500 people on board. Many died by hypothermia in minutes as the water was 28 degrees below freezing.

The remaining 705 survivors were rescued the next day by the steamship, Carpathia and were taken to New York.

This past year has been unprecedented for elephants since record keeping began twenty-three years ago. It is estimated that over two and a half thousand elephants have been poached for their tusks. The tragedy of what is happening is not just what is dying around us, but also what is dying within us.

A Captain’s Log [GC]

A hurricane smashed the hull of a ship called Dreamsong. The boat broke apart on a coral reef near the island of Borneo. They were carrying precious cargo—one thousand cellos and a herd of Asian elephants. From the shore, the orangutans watched from high up in the tree canopy. The captain remained with the elephants while the crew abandoned ship. As the boat rocked and listed to one side, the elephants carefully removed the cellos from their cases and nimbly plucked the strings with their trunks. They began playing a cello suite called One Thousand Rivers.

The orangutans signaled to a pod of whales who soon gathered round the ship. Enraptured, the whales silenced their blows and listened. They lined up end to end on the water’s surface and invited the elephants to cross.

The elephants continued playing as they walked across the bridge of whales. When they touched shore their last note kept resonating on the water.
